Elk City Lake and State Park
From 27th in Independence, 1½ miles west on Main/U.S. 160, 1 mile north on 3325, ¼ mile west on 4600, 1½ miles north on 3300, then ¼ mile west on Squaw Creek. Six scenic hiking and nature trails, which meander through the colorful oak and hickory forest surrounding the lake, are the stand-out features of this park built in 1967. Birders will find neotropical fowl and pileated woodpeckers here, and everyone will enjoy great camping, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. State park entrance charge. Cabins available. Reservations required.
