Earl W. Sutherland Jr.

Burlingame native Earl Sutherland won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1971 “for his discoveries concerning the mechanisms of the action of hormones.” An exhibit about his life is in the Schuyler Museum. An army captain in World War II, Sutherland died at the age of 58 and is buried in Burlingame City Cemetery (from Santa Fe, 1 mile south on U.S. 56). His grave, which notes the Nobel Prize, is in the cemetery’s southeastern-most corner.
