Dalton Gang Hideout and Museum
The Dalton Gang brothers used the home of their sister, Eva Whipple, as a hideout during the late 1880s and built an escape tunnel from the house to the barn where they kept horses for a quick getaway. The National Youth Administration (NYA) rebuilt the barn, which had burned, and the tunnel in 1941, and much of the landscaping, the wishing well, outdoor fireplace/grill, and retaining wall enclosing the property were rebuilt by the NYA and the WPA during the same period. The 96-foot-long, 32-inch-wide, 6½-foot-high dirt tunnel was converted by the WPA into a walkway with stone walls and cement floor, and visitors are welcome to try their hand at slipping through this escape route. Inside the museum you’ll learn about all 15 Dalton siblings (only a few were outlaws) and the exploits of the notorious gang, and you’ll see saddles, guns, and other western artifacts.
