508 NE Sardou. From SW 1st, ¾ mile north on NW Topeka, ¾ mile east on Morse (becomes Sardou), then ¼ mile north on NE Porubsky. Important folks and regular joes frequent this small combo grocery/lunchroom/ neighborhood tavern in “Little Russia” (original residents of this area migrated from Russia to work for the railroad). Since 1947 customers have eagerly squeezed in for Porubsky’s famous very hot chili, hot (hot) pickles, and the cold plate (bread, meat, and cheese piled on a little plastic plate—you assemble). Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; chili season, September-April, Monday-Thursday.
