Belmont Castle
From Penn, 2¾ miles east on Main/U.S. 160, then ¾ mile north on 4500. This captivating stone home was a labor of love built for Dominica “Minnie” Calonder, an immigrant from Switzerland who grew up near the ruins of Belmont Castle in her homeland. Her family emigrated to America in the 1880s, but she never forgot her fanciful dream of living in a castle like Belmont. She eventually married Marell Tucker, who fulfilled her wish and built a home in the style of the original castle. Tucker, a carpenter, hauled the native stone from nearby Mouse Creek, and incorporated green-glass bottles to spell out the home’s name on the front. Completed in 1932, the very unusual home is today a private residence. Drive by only.
