Trail City

A quarantine law against Texas trail cattle, passed by the Kansas legislature in 1885, stopped all trail herds from entering Kansas. As a result Texas cattlemen, including Martin Culver, proposed a National Cattle Trail (bypassing Kansas) for herds trailing from Texas to Montana. Culver went so far as to found the town of Trail City, Colorado, on the state line a few miles west of Coolidge. Due to its immediate cowboy activity, Trail City became known as the wickedest town on the Arkansas River. Culver moved his family from Texas to Coolidge, but nearby Trail City only lasted a few years. The Trail City name, however, was not lost and shows up still today in Coolidge.
