Schermerhorn Park

3501 S. Main. From 7th, 2¼ miles south on Main/K-26. Just before Shoal Creek Bridge, turn east into the park. The arching entrance gate, stone terraces, and retaining walls, built by the WPA in the early 1930s, are fascinating features and transport you back to an earlier time. Wade or take a refreshing dip in the cool shallow waters of the spring-fed Shoal Creek, just as Route 66 travelers have done since the 1920s. Follow the drive to the parking lot behind the superintendent’s house to find a wooded trail that leads you past limestone bluffs covered with lush Ozark vegetation and back to Schermerhorn Cave. Legend says the cave was a hideout for Jesse James. The spring that flows from the cave is home to the dark-sided salamander, the cave salamander, and the gray-bellied salamander, all of which are on the Kansas endangered species list.
