Hillcrest Cemetery

From 8th, ½ mile north on Marion. An inscribed gray granite monument in the northwest corner is the only recognition of the 300 Russian Mennonites buried here who died during the winter of 1874-75 from a smallpox epidemic. A space was carved in that stone to hold the one gravestone found for one of those 300—young Lelah Kirgan. Another “of interest” story here is that of Bertha “Teeny” Williams, who, after the cemetery records were lost in a fire, researched and re-recorded every burial plot. Read her fascinating research findings posted in the cemetery gazebo.
