Civil War Statue
From E. 6th, 1/4 mile north on Niles, 2 1/4 miles west 1st, then 1/2 mile north on Hillside Ceme tery Rd to Hillside Cemetery. Local artist David Lester created this work, designed to honor Civil War soldiers, in 1917. Unlike other war statues of this era, this elaborate but primitive monument is made of hand-molded concrete. Lester served as a private in the 27th New York volunteers during the war, and in 1878 he and his wife moved to Kansas. Due to the effects of the environment, the statue has been encased in a protective metal building, but windows allow a view inside. A sign on the building relates the history of the statue.
